About Citizen One

Citizen One began in Albany, New York when one citizen attending all Common Council meetings noticed that the "news" from those meetings was not being reported until well after the public would have time to participate in the process. In other words, the primary news source’s practice had created a reactive rather than proactive community. This practice permitted all local levels of the legislature to function without input from the citizens.theresa

In 2008, Albany Citizen One was launched by Theresa Grafflin, the frustrated citizen sitting alongside only one other frustrated citizen in the Common Council chamber for several years. The newspaper soon swapped out City Hall reporters and news began getting into the newspapers in time for citizens to react. The citizens of Albany anyway, other cities were still unknowingly receiving stale news from stale reporters.

During the Spring of the first full year of blogging, ACO was lured to the County Legislature where it was soon discovered the assigned "journalist" was never in attendance. There was NO reporting coming out of the County that wasn’t spoon-fed to the "reporter" by the Democrats. (The Dems overwhelmingly outnumbering the GOP in Albany County’s 39 seat legislature.)

In year two, Albany Citizen One was singlehandedly covering meetings of Albany’s Citizens’ Police Review Board, the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Planning Board, Common Council (and all caucuses and committee meetings), the County Legislature and most community recognitions, elections, court cases and events.

The third year led ACO to the State Legislature in addition maintaining the local coverage. This also led to the realization that a conversion and expansion was needed. The week after the 2011 State Legislative session ended, ACO began intense coverage of certain cases in the local judiciary and while beginning work on this website which would provide a citizen’s point of view on local, State and National "news." And Albany Citizen One became New York Citizen One.
