On Monday night, I CDTAed up to Cohoes for the Morse/Nolin Mayoral debate. It was my first bus venture into Cohoes so I got to see a side of it I’ve never seen before. Lucky for me, I had a bus driver who doubled as a Cohoes tour guide. We turned the skinny streets bypassing scantily rested autos until a potential rider would flag down a bus from behind a clothing collection box or from under the shade of a tree. I don’t recall seeing a single shelter as the bus wound around orange canned warnings of axle damaging potholes.
The bus driver pointed out the main CDTA drag as Remson Street and my immediate attention was drawn to the Hotel Cohoes. (Yeah, I’m funny like that…love the flop houses!) For those of you who, like myself, only visit downtown Cohoes when political agendas lead you there…the Hotel Cohoes is not as fancy as the name implies. As a matter of fact, it is uninhabitable but, if the Cohoes Local Development Corporation is to be believed, the City of Cohoes has it on the road to productivity.
The CLDC evicted the 20 boarders (they must be the newbies on my street) and hired a fumigator at over $22K to rid the place of vermin and remove the bodies. (Beware of the scattering downtown neighbors.) Next up, for the Remson Street neighbor of Marra’s Pharmacy is the promise of a Albany Sheriff work detail to toss all the trash from the vacant building. (Seen below)

On Wednesday night, I ducked into the Unitarian Church for the Albany County executive forum or “meet the candidates” night. I must first say that I’ve had another hectic week so getting to the “let’s just call it a debate…took quite an effort but, damn, ( am sure glad I made the effort.
Having watched the transformation towards a more functional and transparent County government…and watching it continue to evolve, my mind had been made up. The current County Executive, Dan McCoy, has delivered on all his promises…and more. But then, delivering on promises is not as exciting and reneging on them…from my perspective…honestly, I may have become a little bored with the good coming out of the Executive’s office.
I may not have always agreed with McCoy’s crazy progressive ideas (read that: bomb train) bu5t I have to admit this Executive has put his money where his mouth was…he has been a leader and he had my vote.
I was sold, McCoy was my guy but then I listened to Dan Egan – and I have a new blog hero!! As you know, I truly enjoy a dirty campaign. I basked in the glory of Paladino and still fantasize about being part of the Stone/Caputo/Paladino dirty trickster team. Now, I’m not fond of Team Cuomo so it didn’t take a lot to push me aboard the Paladino Love Boat…but I do love me some McCoy.
On Wednesday, my eyes were opened to the next four years filled with political entertainment. While I had been mildly entertained by the Egan mailers which were unusually sleezy and greeted me at my front door 3 out of 5 workdays, it took this forum to be the nudge I needed to jump full force into the Egan campaign.

On Monday night, I joined a special caucus of the Albany Common Council for a discussion regarding the contract between the City of Albany and the Council 82 police dispatchers. Now, hey – while I’m considered anti-union, I am certainly NOT considered anti-fair. That said, it is not fair for the police dispatchers to be without a contract for 68 months and counting….if you went to Albany schools and your mathematically challenged…that’s since 2010.
The dispatcher’s negotiations with the City reached an emergency status in which a “fact finders” report (only permitted at “emergency” stage of negotiations) was developed. Yeah, I’m only repeating…don’t ask me what exactly that is…I’m just the anti-union messenger.
Apparently, however, I less anti-union than some on the Albany Common Council – and those “some” were elected by claiming their solidarity with their union supporters. (Funny how that changes after election day!)
Frank Commisso, the younger, presented a resolution in support of a City and union compromise which would hurt each side of the negotiations a little less and would help the citizens maintain their emergency lifeline (dispatchers) while not digging a deeper hole in their pocketbook.
Councilman, Mike O’Brien, hereafter known as MOB, supported Commisso’s call for action with case law claiming the non-union council people should su8pport the compromise resolution because there’s not only legal precedence but “it’s fair,” he claimed, “doing nothing is fair to no one.” (I nearly applauded but my Councilmember, Conti, was already shaking with nervousness with the direction of the conversation and two spectators taking notes.)
In response to MOB’s case for support of the negotiation, Judy Doesschate, tosses her homemade case law across the table at MOB in an attempt to make a case for “doing nothing” to assist the city/union reach a contract compromise. (Aside, the man leaving the meeting alongside me laughted at the ignorance exhibited by JJ, Judge Judy, with “I can’t imagine that woman at home – who could she be married to??” To which I replied with a chuckle, “Judge” Keefe….my new friend busted a gut, “that explains so much!!”)

Last week, I met up with John D’Antonio and Tony Butler when they successfully swiped the 5-Star Karate Program out from under the City of Albany. After the successful coup, I had a little chit chat with some in the know types about the Albany boxing debacle which began when a questionable video was produced after hours in a City owned boxing gym.
All the information presented while at a previous Albany Committee Meeting was confirmed – and more. I was told that the leadership of Albany’s Parks and Rec is destroying the entire department and that the employee they seem to be protecting, Jerrick Jones, has always been a problem at the Boxing Program.
So, if you haven’t been following – catch up! When this fiasco was brought to light (see above link), the citizens got more dirt than any bootleg video could deliver from the city owned gym. During the Committee meeting, Jonathan Jones, “Mayor” Sheehan’s appointee at the P&R, attributed the departure of 35 (or so) gym patrons to the Cohoes gym with an infuriating shrug. “The kids don’t wanna come back.”
Jones skips tracks by disregarding Albany youth outmigration by address what he thinks the committee wants to hear. He states that the guy who opened the doors and permitted access to city property was “disciplined” and charged a fee of $120…or the equivalent of renting out the gym. (How much ya wanna bet the insurance company wouldn’t have liked that if an accident occurred.)
With a room full of disgruntled boxers behind me, I listened as councilfolk Fahey (Chair), Flynn, Robinson, Commisso, Bailey and Golby listened to Jones “defend” his program. “Well, Jerrick Jones” the culprit in shooing Albany youth to Cohoes, “is not an easy person to work with.” Let’s just say it, Jerrick Jones is not just detrimental to the boxing program but to all the youth (and adults) in Albany.
I appears that Jerrick Jones has a practice of prohibiting anyone from training at the gym who is not training with him. His strategy for maintaining his control over the property is to kick people out for no reason and then, when they protest, he calls to police for an official record of their being kicked out…for no reason. Dang right their pissed off!
Surprisingly, or not, when the chair kept shutting down the speakers with her undeclared time limit, the Committee members demanded to “let them speak!” The room full of frustrated citizens reached out to the Committee, we’re “crying out to fix this!” Jerrick Jones should be ousted from the boxing gym…for the good of the youth in our Community.

It appears that Dan Egan, wannabee candidate for County Exec, is a creature of habit…and, in this case, that’s not an admirable trait. Just when I finished criticizing Egan’s disregard for ethical campaigning (click here!!) I arrived home to find his further assault against political decency.
Dan Egan seems to have torn a page out of “Judge” HHR’s ethically challenging playbook.
With the latest mailing, Egan warns Albany County voters that Dan McCoy”doesn’t stand up for them.” With this libelous remark, Egan goes on to cite his own tirade he seems to believe was legitimized by the Times Union…essentially…Egan cites himself as a factual source. Ya might as well site this as an Egan editorial!
While I love Lauren Stanworth’s writing, I must say, a peek at the expenditures of the Egan campaign might lend a more fairly structured article. While screaming about the normal practice of being supported financially by those who believe in a candidate…Egan seems free to spend his not- too shabby war chest without criticism.
Well, if it weren’t for me.
Check this out…I love Walmart…I love it because I boycotted it for 10 years and then returned to find the love of my discount life. I love Walmart in the early mornings…before the Walmart regs have even thought about getting out of bed. That may also be the reason I don’t run into any super liberals…they must shop for their non-union office supplies in the afternoon. (The libbers are not known for their early hours either!)
If you’ll click here, you’ll see that the Egan Campaign has a love of food, particularly Dunkin Donuts and Pepper Jacks…and they also shop at the anti-union shop…Walmart. I didn’t see any anti-union purchases in McCoy’s expenditure…quite the contrary.
I watched last night as one in Team Egan spoke in disgust of the some of the Albany Common Council member’s refusals to support the Police Union and their dispatchers…and all I could think about is Team Egan’s not walking their talk.
All in all, I guess Team Egan is mostly telling the Albany voters to believe what they tell them…not what is true. (I see why LWV gave up!! I’m tired!!) Ya see, as former president of the School Board, Egan knows just how dumb his population really is…he’s got the inside…he directed the dumb down, and he’s taking advantage of the dumb down.
Hey, everyone come out and vote for Dan McCoy in the primary…as the only man who walks his talk for County Executive.
